Back, When I Was At School...

Once I had discovered how to generate scale, arpeggio and chord patterns for myself, I could then play through or look at a piece of music and by using my new thought process, I had it memorised. Concepts such as playing the piece in a different key were also not a problem as I could see and hear how it all went together.
But it wasn't just for me. I also started to explain these techniques to my students.
Teaching At College
A great example of how the techniques work is when a few years later, I was teaching at a music college. The students were required to learn specific scale patterns throughout their course. I looked through the course and wrote down a list of all the scale patterns the students were required to learn in the entire year. The list was tiny and I thought it was pretty pathetic.
